What I Read This Week: 9/5/21
This week's reading pile features Naoya Matsumoto's Kaiju No. 8, Geoff John's Green Lantern, and Oda's One Piece!
What Did Kenny Read This Week?
Welcome back, friends! Here are some of the comics that I read this week. I read a ton, but I always make sure to share some of the highlights and recommendations from my reading pile.
Enjoy!
Kaiju No. 8
I’m really into the new manga series Kaiju No. 8 by Naoya Matusmoto and Shonen Jump. This story of a man who can turn into a monster has so much action, heart, and cool monsters that it always leaves me wanting more. It really reminds me of watching old Godzilla movies as a kid and jamming it together with anime and manga like Fullmetal Alchemist or Attack on Titan. I’m caught up on all the chapters on the Shonen Jump App and I can’t wait for the next installment.
Green Lantern (Geoff Johns)
I always try to switch up the books that I’m reading, but right now I’m on a huge Green Lantern kick. I decided to go back and start rereading Geoff John’s run from the mid to late 2000s. This was the version of Green Lantern that brought me back into superhero comics, and I thought it was time to give it another look. I started at Issue #1 and I just got up to the Sinestro Corps War. I might actually go back and start reading the Green Lantern Corps series as well. Everything I love about Green Lantern is encompassed in those series. And honestly, the 2005 - 2011 era of DC Comics might be my favorite.
One Piece
I’m going to have to do a longer post on this in the future, but during quarantine, I made it my personal mission to read all of Oda’s pirate adventure that took the world by storm—One Piece. I didn’t know much about it going in, all I knew was that the hype for this series was huge. During the lockdown, I read and caught up through all 1024 chapters… that’s over 20,480 pages of manga.
After all of that, what did I learn?
I learned why this is the most popular series in Shonen Jump history.
There is so much imagination and character development in this series that it boggles my mind. It’s made me realize I need to up my game when it comes to giving every character a backstory worthy of them having their own comic book series.
Also, it’s got some of the craziest powers and abilities I’ve ever seen in a mainstream property.
